Our network is fully operational in the Selma, AL area and restoration is underway for a small number of sites that remain impacted in the Griffin, GA area. Emergency Management engineers will continue that work as conditions safely allow.

We are saddened by Thursday’s devastating tornados across Alabama and Georgia as a dangerous storm passed through the South, and our thoughts are with those impacted. T-Mobile’s Community Support teams deployed early this morning and are headed to Selma, AL and Griffin, GA today with emergency response vehicles that will offer a range of services and supplies including free Wi-Fi, charging stations, charging banks, charging cables and more.

We know that connectivity is of utmost importance during critical times such as this. Our network has minimal impact in the hardest hit area of Selma, AL and a small number of sites down in the Griffin, GA area. We have engineers continuing to assess and closely monitor equipment, and they’ll work to restore impacted sites as conditions safely allow.

T-Mobile has activated its emergency plan and is monitoring and preparing for Tropical Storm Nicole, which is gaining strength northwest of the Bahamas and is now located 205 miles east of Palm Beach, Florida. Nicole is predicted to make landfall on Florida’s Atlantic Coast between West Palm Beach and Vero Beach early Thursday morning and could become a hurricane. Strong winds, heavy rain and a storm surge causing coastal flooding are expected. Coastal flooding is also possible as far north as the Carolinas including Charleston and South Carolina, and Tybee Island, Georgia.  

Here's what we’re doing to be ready to respond and assist customers and communities: 

Network, Community Support and Stores

T-Mobile’s Network Emergency Management Team has extensively hardened our network in advance of the hurricane season and continues preparation to ensure resiliency of our service in areas anticipated to be affected by Nicole. The team has engineers, technicians and equipment — including generators, quick deploy satellites and temporary backhaul equipment such as microwave solutions — pre-staged in Tampa and Live Oak, Florida ready to roll and support customers, communities and officials. While our Community Support team is pre-staged in Miami and Live Oak with personnel and equipment to provide services such as Wi-Fi, charging devices, chargers and more. We’ll monitor and assess impact as the storm makes landfall and deploy relief efforts as needed. We are also assessing store locations in the projected path with some stores closing early this evening with delayed openings possible. Our priority is keeping people connected when they need it most as we prepare for Nicole to make landfall in Florida. While the majority of our customers are on plans with unlimited talk, text and data, for those who aren't, we are offering unlimited talk, text and data starting November 10 through November 14 in the following Florida counties: Hendry, Glades, Highlands, Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and Saint Lucie.

Cutting-edge technology launched in Texas Emergency Communications Center giving customers new option to text for emergency help

Bellevue, Wash. and Chicago, Ill. – Nov. 1, 2022 – With a vast majority of the <a href="https://www.nena.org/page/911Statistics" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">estimated 240 million 911 calls</a> made in the U.S each year coming from a wireless device, fast and reliable connectivity in an emergency matters. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) has been at the forefront of industry-leading innovative public safety connectivity solutions like Location-Based routing and Next Generation 911 because every second counts and instant communication with 911 telecommunicators can save lives. This first-ever NextGen 911 RTT technology is now operating at an Emergency Communications Center (ECC) in Hood County, Texas, allowing T-Mobile customers to communicate with 911 through simultaneous conversational text and voice – text messages can be sent and read at the same time – without the need for teletype (TTY) technology. T-Mobile built native <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/responsibility/consumer-info/accessibility-policy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RTT features</a> into its devices in 2016, which gives customers the ability to utilize modern conversational text capabilities and allows a text to be sent and read at the same time without the need to hit send or use a specialized device. Then in 2020, the Un-carrier became the first wireless provider to <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/network/tmobile-next-generation-911-location-based-routing" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">launch Location-Based Routing and Next Generation 911 (NG911) connectivity over IP</a> – two critical advancements that can speed up emergency response times by helping pinpoint the location of callers and enable a more efficient and effective 911 system. T-Mobile to Donate Up to $1 Million to Hurricane Recovery this MLB Postseason

Weather is more unpredictable every year. Communities in disaster-prone areas prepare for the worst, yet sometimes there’s no safeguarding from the force of nature.

Take Hurricane Ian, the fifth-strongest hurricane to make landfall in the United States. After pummeling Cuba, Ian recently hit the western coast of Florida as a Category 4 storm and made landfall again in South Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane. Ian caused widespread flooding, power outages and severe damage in communities that bore the brunt of the storm. More than 100 people have lost their lives.

This type of devastation might not make people think about the role of wireless companies. Yet as emergency response teams work nonstop to rescue people and provide food, water and medical care, connectivity is more important than ever. A wireless network is critical to relief efforts. It’s the gateway to resources and information, but more important, it’s a lifeline. Wireless isn’t just a utility, it’s the connection to our worlds. And as a provider of that service, we have an immense responsibility to ensure impacted communities have the connections and resources they need in the moments that matter most.

Days before Ian made landfall, our Emergency Management team was already staging portable cell sites and fueling generators that are now deployed to hard-hit areas. I am so impressed at how well our network held up when our customers needed it most. T-Mobile’s Community Support team members, in their Magenta trucks, are in Florida with Wi-Fi trailers and mobile command centers, offering devices and chargers to community members. We are also offering unlimited talk, text and data to displaced residents at emergency shelters, local schools and more.

Disaster recovery is personal to me. It was just over five years ago when I experienced devastation like this firsthand. A few days after Hurricane Maria leveled the island of Puerto Rico on Sept. 20, 2017, I arrived at an otherworldly scene of destruction. The Category 4 hurricane came less than two weeks after Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 hurricane, tore through the Caribbean and caused widespread flooding, crippling Puerto Rico’s already fragile electrical grid. After Maria struck, nearly 90% of the population lost cell phone service. Nearly 3,000 people were killed, and the island’s infrastructure was decimated.

People desperately needed shelter, food, drinking water and dry clothing. Without electricity, let alone a functioning cellular tower, Puerto Rico was essentially cut off from the outside world. It became abundantly clear that battered communities were counting on providers like T-Mobile to restore our cell towers and deliver communication equipment. Connecting people to their family and friends would give them a semblance of hope.

We’ve learned a lot since then about how we can help prepare for and respond to disasters. Since February 2019, T-Mobile has deployed emergency vehicles and equipment, teams of engineers and technicians to more than 57 disaster locations in the United States and Puerto Rico. Whenever and wherever communities need us, we show up with open hearts.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, for example, California, Oregon and Washington experienced one of the worst wildfire seasons on record. We created touchless drop-offs at shelters, and T-Mobile trucks with Magenta-clad volunteers provided the charging supplies and pre-lit devices to shelters and communities in need.

Unfortunately, catastrophic weather events like these aren’t easing up. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s <a href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/blogs/beyond-data/2021-us-billion-dollar-weather-and-climate-disasters-historical" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Centers for Environmental Information found</a> that in 2021 alone, the U.S. experienced 20 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disasters. The year before that, we saw 22.

The <a href="https://www.epa.gov/climate-indicators/weather-climate" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Protection Agency notes</a> scientific studies indicating that climate change is leading to more frequent or more intense extreme weather events and conditions. That’s why the Un-carrier is proactively investing in infrastructure upgrades and <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/community/2022-disaster-season" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">expanding our fleet of emergency response equipment and vehicles</a>. We’re also stationing critical personnel in communities before, during and after a disaster. And as part of Disaster Preparedness Month, we shared tips about how to <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/community/family-emergency-plan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">create family emergency plans.</a>

Technology is also helping emergency services professionals and companies like T-Mobile better anticipate natural disasters and provide vital resources. <a href="https://www.nifc.gov/fire-information/nfn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">More wildfires have ignited in 2022 than in the past 10 years</a>, scorching nearly 7 million acres to date, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. For first responders to gain the upper hand, it’s critical that we integrate smarter technology into the emergency response strategy.

This technology gives our Emergency Management Team access to the latest weather forecasts as they head to the frontlines. <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/network/t-mobile-5g-powers-pano-ai-wildfire-detection-system" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">T-Mobile also teamed up with Pano AI</a> to pair our 5G connectivity with their cameras, cloud platform and artificial intelligence to enable faster detection and response to wildfires. It’s amazing technology that updates fire and emergency professionals with near real-time information on a fire’s behavior and location, before it becomes uncontrollable.

Natural disasters and extreme weather events are increasingly becoming more severe as they grow in number — striking communities year-round with often deadly effect. Preparing an easily-accessible family emergency plan with the right information is more important than ever​.

​A family emergency plan is a document you complete with your loved ones that includes steps you will take in an ​emergency. When a ​disaster​ strikes or your community experiences an extreme weather event​, ​​communicating with loved ones will be important. ​Gather the contact information of your loved ones, write each phone number and address down on paper, and share your contact information with them too.

T-Mobile created an easy-to-use template which can even be completed on your phone. When it’s completed, take a screenshot and save it in a special folder in your photos app or files for easy access. Print out a copy, laminate it and keep it in your go bag.

T-Mobile’s Emergency Management team is continuing recovery efforts in Florida today in the most impacted areas, specifically focusing on Fort Myers and Pine Island. Temporary backhaul equipment including microwave solutions is continuing to be deployed where needed. Teams are also continuing to refuel fixed and portable generators across the state of Florida.

They remain deployed at Lee County Civic Center in North Fort Meyers to continue supporting recovery efforts in that area. Additionally, they were able to provide hotspots, charging solutions and more for the Captiva Island Fire Control District, which allowed the fire department to get back up and running.

Network recovery across the state of Florida has been successful, and most teams are moving to business as usual operations due to the near-entirety of our network being back up and running.

T-Mobile’s Community Support team has set up Wi-Fi trailers and charging stations in several locations in Fort Myers and Port Charlotte at emergency shelters today. There is Wi-Fi connectivity and charging stations available for those in need.

T-Mobile is extending unlimited talk, text and data for all postpaid and prepaid customers in the following impacted Florida counties through Wednesday, October 12:

In Florida, T-Mobile’s Emergency Management team is continuing support recovery in the hardest hit parts of Lee County, including Sanibel Island and Bonita Beach. While almost all of our network in Florida is operational — and the majority of our sites withstood the storm — the ongoing network deployments continue to boost areas needing enhancement, help residents working to assess damage and support federal, state and local organizations and officials with additional capacity, hotspots, devices and more. The Emergency Management team set up quick deploy satellite kits (also called a VSATs) at our network sites that were down on Sanibel Island, and these temporary backhaul solutions will continue to support the community and residents as they return home to assess damage. Also for Sanibel Island, our teams are using watercraft, including a barge and boat, to safely move equipment to and around the island as needed.

The Emergency Management team is also deploying to the Lee County Civic Center in North Fort Meyers and will be setting up a SatCOLT and Wi-Fi solutions to provide capacity and support for recovery efforts that that area. Work in Sarasota County also continues to support remaining commercial power outages.

And across the state, teams are continuing daily refueling of fixed and portable generators using fuel trucks and a chartered fuel barge located off Sanibel Island.

In Florida, almost all of T-Mobile’s network is operational. The majority of our network sites were able to withstand the storm, and our Emergency Management team’s preparedness efforts helped maintain connectivity and minimize loss of service. In South Carolina & North Carolina, recovery efforts have subsided as the network sustained minimal impact and is fully back up and running.

To help increase capacity in the hardest hit areas—including Lee County and specifically Bonita Beach and Sanibel Island, which sustained sizeable infrastructure damage — teams have deployed temporary cell solutions including SatCOLTs, quick deploy satellite kits (also called VSATs), CoWs and IP/Wi-Fi trailers. On Sanibel Island specifically, the Emergency Management team is setting up a quick deploy satellite kit to provide a temporary backhaul solution at our one site that’s still down on the island. All of these mobile cell technologies help maintain communication services during this critical time. The Emergency Management team also has a SatCOLT in Sarasota County to support ongoing power outages in that area.

T-Mobile teams are assessing sites in South Carolina and North Carolina, and continue to work closely with federal, state and local officials and emergency teams. The vast majority of T-Mobile’s network is up and running in impacted areas. A small percentage of sites are still offline due to commercial power, third-party vendors experiencing issues or other factors. T-Mobile Emergency Management teams will be deploying additional network assets where needed and as conditions safely allow them to do so.

T-Mobile’s network continues to improve in Florida as sites that were previously offline due to accessibility, power outages, third-party vendor issues or other factors are getting up and running. Restoring service in the hardest hit areas on the west coast of Florida, including Ft. Myers and Lee County remains a priority. High water in flooded areas, including Volusia County and Daytona Beach within, impacted some sites. Teams are continuing to assess and move in additional network equipment needed as safety allows.

T-Mobile’s Emergency Management team continues to deploy generators where commercial power is still unavailable and additional network assets such as SatCOLTs, CoWs, quick deploy satellites and microwave solutions. There is also a significant effort underway to refuel generators across the state.

They will be at emergency shelters and other locations as needs are identified. Across the region, the vast majority of T-Mobile’s network remains up and running. Recovery efforts in Florida are underway, with some sites remaining on generator power and areas with outages are impacted by commercial power availability or third-party vendor issues. Our teams are also on the ground to check sites, refuel generators and add emergency equipment as needed and as conditions allow. We are also closely monitoring Ian’s path and impact in South Carolina and North Carolina, and continuing to work closely with federal, state and local teams.

Tropical Storm Ian has intensified to a Category 1 hurricane as it heads toward South Carolina with landfall expected Friday morning. Florida is experiencing river and urban flooding, and hurricane-force winds are expected along the coasts of northeast Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.  Flooding is also expected in southeastern George and eastern South Carolina.
