T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) today announced its network once again earned top honors in <a href="https://www.speedtest.net/global-index/united-states" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ookla's Speedtest® Global Index Market Analysis United States Q4 2022 report</a>. With top marks in every single category for overall network performance and repeated wins for 5G, T-Mobile is hitting the ground running in 2023 as the national network leader for customer experience. In addition to topping national rankings, T-Mobile’s network proved fastest in 45 states and the District of Columbia as well as in 86 of the 100 most populous U.S. cities.

T-Mobile has moved all of its 5G and 4G traffic to the new cloud native converged core, boosting performance for its customers.

Why it matters: The move immediately enhances performance on T-Mobile’s network for both 5G and 4G customers with even faster speeds and lower latency (more responsiveness). The new core gateway also allows T-Mobile to more quickly and easily test and deliver new 5G and IoT applications at scale, expediting time to market.

BELLEVUE, Wash. and SAN JOSE, Calif. — Dec. 15, 2022 —T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced today it has teamed up with Cisco to launch the world’s largest highly scalable and distributed nationwide cloud native converged core gateway. The Un-carrier has moved all its 5G and 4G traffic to the new cloud native core gateway, which immediately boosted performance for customers with more than a 10% improvement in both speed and latency. It’s like turning two townhouses into a massive mansion by removing walls (or barriers) and then loading that mansion with the latest, groundbreaking technology.

The new converged core gateway also simplifies operations for T-Mobile, allowing the Un-carrier to shift resources with better agility and roll out services like 5G Home Internet. It will also expedite time to market for new 5G and IoT services like network slicing and Voice over 5G (VoNR) by allowing T-Mobile to easily test and deploy new capabilities at scale.  

“T-Mobile customers already have access to the largest, most powerful 5G network in the country, and we’re innovating every day to supercharge their experience even further,” said Delan Beah, Senior Vice President of Core Network and Services Engineering at T-Mobile. “This cloud native core gateway takes our network to new heights, allowing us to push 5G forward by delivering next-level performance for consumers and businesses nationwide while setting the stage for new applications enabled by next-gen networks.”

With a fully automated converged core gateway, T-Mobile can simplify network functions across the cloud, <a>edge</a> and data centers to significantly reduce operational life cycle management. The increased efficiency is an immediate benefit for customers, providing them with even faster speeds. The new core is also more distributed than ever before, leading to lower latency and advancing capabilities like edge computing.

The converged core solution uses a broad mix of Cisco’s flagship networking solutions including the Cisco 8000 Series routers, 5G and 4G packet core gateways, Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS), and Cisco Nexus 9000 Series Switches with Cisco Network Services Orchestrator for full stack automation.

New research shows that checking in with your friends and family via a quick text message goes a lot further than you think.

The last time someone popped into your head and you thought, “I should really text them to check in,” did you?

Perhaps, but maybe not. We all do it. We think of someone and mean to send a “just saying hi” text, and then we forget, or maybe we wonder if such a simple text really matters with everything going on in our busy lives.

But new research suggests that texts like these do matter. A lot.

According to a recent <a href="https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/psp-pspi0000402.pdf">study</a> published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, sending a brief message or casually reaching out to someone to check in elicits greater feelings of happiness, gratitude and appreciation in the receiver than the sender had anticipated.

Over the course of a series of 13 experiments with more than 5,900 participants, researchers asked people sending a check-in text or call (not a social media interaction) how much they thought the recipient would appreciate the gesture. Then the researchers asked the recipients of these texts how much they valued the messages. The findings of all 13 experiments showed that the senders of the check-in texts greatly underestimated how valuable the messages actually were to those who received them.

Some good news: Recent data from <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com">T-Mobile</a> suggests people are continuing the upward trend of turning to texting even at holiday time: For instance, this past Thanksgiving, the wireless provider saw over 3 billion total messages sent, which was a 7% increase in volume compared with <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/community/holiday-psa-how-to-thank-someone-best-just-text">Thanksgiving 2021</a>. Expectations are that there will continue to be an increase in texting around holidays like Christmas and New Year’s.

It’s information that demonstrates the power of connecting with others, even in the most brief and casual way, in our daily lives. Mental health experts have touted the use of <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/warmline-mental-health-help-hotline_l_63695bfee4b05f221e7cda12">“warmlines”</a> that allow people to call or text a number when they need to vent or be comforted. In the last couple years, FWA has massively disrupted the traditional internet industry. In the <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/business/t-mobile-q3-2022-earnings">third quarter of 2022</a>, T-Mobile welcomed its two millionth internet customer, doubling its total number of customers in just six months, making T-Mobile the fastest growing internet provider for the last four quarters in a row. It's clear FWA is taking a bite out of Big Internet, growing by more than 70% across all providers since Q1 of this year.
