BELLEVUE, Wash. — January 30, 2023 — Today T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced the company's latest step forward in its sustainability efforts, including an industry-leading commitment to achieve net-zero emissions across its entire carbon footprint by 2040. To bolster this new goal, T-Mobile also signed onto <a href="https://www.theclimatepledge.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Climate Pledge</a>, a cross-sector community of companies and organizations working together to solve the challenges of cutting global carbon emissions for a sustainable future.

“As we know sustainability is important to our customers and stakeholders, T-Mobile has made great progress in reducing our environmental footprint – and now we're taking even bigger steps to reduce our carbon emissions with a commitment to meeting SBTi’s Net-Zero Standard,” said Mike Sievert, T-Mobile CEO. “We are proud that we are doing our part to create a sustainable future for all – including becoming the first in U.S. wireless to set this bold target. And we hope companies like ours — and the partners and suppliers we work alongside — will join us in setting their own aggressive longer-term goals like these.”

With the company’s new commitment, T-Mobile becomes the first in U.S. wireless to set a net-zero goal for all three emissions scopes that has been validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) using their Net-Zero Standard – the world’s first framework for company targets that aligns with the latest climate science. This goal covers emission scopes 1 and 2, inclusive of direct emissions from T-Mobile’s operations and facilities, as well as indirect emissions from purchased electricity.

The Un-carrier’s new goal also covers all remaining indirect scope 3 emissions (the company’s entire footprint!) — including those produced by suppliers, customer device usage, materials and fuel required to ship products, employee travel, and more—which represents roughly two-thirds of the company’s carbon footprint.

“While T-Mobile's net-zero goal is a decades-long endeavor, we know how important it is to take definitive actions now to reduce our environmental impact for future generations,” said Janice Kapner, chief communications and corporate responsibility officer at T-Mobile. “We’re committed to measurable progress and holding ourselves accountable with strong governance practices, consistent and transparent reporting, and ongoing collaboration with leading sustainability experts.”

The Climate Pledge, co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019, is a collective commitment to achieve net-zero 10 years ahead of <a href="https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement/the-paris-agreement" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Paris Agreement</a>. T-Mobile joins nearly 400 organizations that have signed the Pledge, all of which agree to:

Is brick-and-mortar retail dead?

As the head of T-Mobile’s Consumer business, and more important, someone who has worked both inside stores and in support of them for nearly my entire career, I am often asked what the role of brick-and-mortar shopping will be in the future, including if there is one at all. As online shopping has become increasingly popular over the past decade or so, it seems to be a continual point of discussion. T-Mobile’s CEO Mike Sievert (then COO) even talked about it in a social post in 2017 called <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/long-live-store-mike-sievert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Long Live the Store</a>. And here we are today, continuing to contemplate it! One thing I’ve learned during nearly 30 years of working in retail, is that change is constant. Large department stores. Smaller footprint stores. Pop-ups. Online shopping. In-store experiences. Curbside pickups. Doorstep drop-offs. We’re actually seeing some interesting trends emerge right now that have been brewing for some time, but likely were accelerated with the Covid-19 pandemic. In the last two years, American consumers have spent a staggering $1.7 trillion online and <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2022/03/15/pandemic-digital-spend-17-trillion/?sh=11f5f7fd5035" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">e-commerce spending jumped</a> 55% as consumers looked for safe ways to shop. But as things began to improve, consumers started to once again crave in-person options. In fact, some online-only retailers like Warby Parker and Fabletics moved to opening physical stores. The <a href="https://nrf.com/blog/us-retailers-announced-many-store-openings-in-2021" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Retail Foundation reported</a> that in 2021 alone, more than 8,100 new physical retail stores opened. Today, in our post-pandemic world, no surprise, customers want to shop in multiple ways – their way! <a href="https://nielseniq.com/global/en/insights/commentary/2021/consumer-behavior-in-the-covid-recovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Data by NeilsenIQ </a>show that more than two-thirds of those surveyed said they have now changed the way they shop because of Covid-19. This trend is only expected to grow. Getting back to the question at hand – Is brick-and-mortar retail dead? Here’s what I think: Yes, the way we’ve known it is dead. But it’s because physical shopping is changing – yet again – and will deliver experiences that will surprise and delight customers in ways that are more innovative than ever. We’re entering a new era of retail where customers are no longer asking for more choices, they expect it. And we agree! A one-size-fits-all-approach to retail is long gone, and if we can’t offer a multi-channel, customized retail shopping experience, then we have missed the mark. Customers want us to meet them where they want us to be. That’s a good thing, because it’s our specialty here at T-Mobile. Last year we brought Total Experience to life – combining Care and Retail to eliminate customer pain points by streamlining issue resolution within geographical areas. Total Experience has given us tremendous opportunities to anticipate and solve problems more effectively. Now, we are reimagining retail holistically by redefining the experiences we offer and bringing even more flexibility to customers. One part of this includes narrowing in on four distinct brick-and-mortar store formats that will serve customers’ different needs.

• Signature stores. You may have already visited one of the few T-Mobile brand showrooms in iconic places around the country. These stores wow customers and employees with ultimate Un-carrier experiences, like exciting events and product launches. • Experience stores. These company-owned Experience stores already exist today but will evolve to deliver the latest and broadest assortment of T-Mobile products and services – within 30 minutes of most customers. Much like Signature, these stores will be staffed by our customer-obsessed Mobile Experts with expertise to handle every issue … from A to Z. Customers will also have access to complete service capabilities through our Team of Experts customer service model. Soon to be our fastest-growing format, these store openings will provide new jobs around the country. • Neighborhood stores. Customers will experience a blend of convenience and service for their everyday needs at Neighborhood stores, offering our most popular products and services. These company-owned and Authorized Retailer-operated stores will be located in large and small areas across America and will open up new job opportunities right in their communities. • Express stores. Our new Express format – branded as Metro by T-Mobile and operated by Authorized Retailers – will offer fast ways to purchase prepaid and select postpaid products. Express will also create new jobs for the entrepreneurs (who often live in the communities) operating them. Over time, we’ll create more visual distinction for customers to know what type of store they’re visiting to meet their needs.

We are also bringing retail directly to our customers in innovative ways. • Mobile stores (aka Mobile Trucks). Our mobile truck fleet will provide retail services where they’re needed – at brand launch events, in underserved rural areas to get customers up and running on the T-Mobile network as it becomes available in their area (and even before a brick-and-mortar store is open) or deployed to communities affected by disasters. • Store-in-store. We will continue to offer customers the convenience to purchase T-Mobile products and services where they already shop. Small kiosks at mass merchants and big-box retailers such as Costco, Walmart, Best Buy and elsewhere will be staffed by our T-Mobile team or trained store employees. We’ll enhance these physical offerings with many new innovative digital experiences that will integrate seamlessly into physical retail. Lastly, we can’t forget our secret weapon: our people. T-Mobile has the best team in wireless. Technology has transformed the way people shop, but we know that consumers also often want the option for human assistance and connection. When they do, Team Magenta will be ready to serve them as only we can! Completely evolving our retail approach to support customers is a multi-year process, and this is just the first step of our plan. We’ve been busy working through changes in how we’ll staff our stores, hire new talent, and invest in technology to keep modernizing our systems. We’re leaving no stone unturned, because we know if we want to achieve our mission to be the best in the world at connecting customers to their world, “good enough” won’t cut it. Looking at the road ahead, this restless, never satisfied, Un-carrier mentality will continue to fuel our customer obsession and help us become the undisputed customer experience leader. New research shows that checking in with your friends and family via a quick text message goes a lot further than you think.

The last time someone popped into your head and you thought, “I should really text them to check in,” did you?

Perhaps, but maybe not. We all do it. We think of someone and mean to send a “just saying hi” text, and then we forget, or maybe we wonder if such a simple text really matters with everything going on in our busy lives.

But new research suggests that texts like these do matter. A lot.

According to a recent <a href="https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/psp-pspi0000402.pdf">study</a> published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, sending a brief message or casually reaching out to someone to check in elicits greater feelings of happiness, gratitude and appreciation in the receiver than the sender had anticipated.

Over the course of a series of 13 experiments with more than 5,900 participants, researchers asked people sending a check-in text or call (not a social media interaction) how much they thought the recipient would appreciate the gesture. Then the researchers asked the recipients of these texts how much they valued the messages. The findings of all 13 experiments showed that the senders of the check-in texts greatly underestimated how valuable the messages actually were to those who received them.

Some good news: Recent data from <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com">T-Mobile</a> suggests people are continuing the upward trend of turning to texting even at holiday time: For instance, this past Thanksgiving, the wireless provider saw over 3 billion total messages sent, which was a 7% increase in volume compared with <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/community/holiday-psa-how-to-thank-someone-best-just-text">Thanksgiving 2021</a>. Expectations are that there will continue to be an increase in texting around holidays like Christmas and New Year’s.

It’s information that demonstrates the power of connecting with others, even in the most brief and casual way, in our daily lives. Mental health experts have touted the use of <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/warmline-mental-health-help-hotline_l_63695bfee4b05f221e7cda12">“warmlines”</a> that allow people to call or text a number when they need to vent or be comforted. And you may have come across a social media post inviting you to call a number that connects you to pre-recorded affirmations <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/03/06/1084800784/peptoc-hotline-kindergarteners">from kindergarteners</a> to give you that sometimes needed pep talk (707-873-7862). All these things simply underscore previous <a href="https://www.ajgponline.org/article/S1064-7481(21)00548-0/fulltext">research</a> that has illustrated the strong link between our wellbeing and the purpose that personal connections can give us, especially as we age. It turns out a seemingly small check-in text message can have big benefits for our mental health and sense of belonging.

So next time you’re considering sending that “just saying hi” text, don’t think twice. Hit send and deliver a little dose of happiness to the world. Happy holidays!

A local food bank representative in Washington estimates they are short as much as 4 million pounds of food right now compared to previous years and need your help. Here’s how T-Mobile is giving back by donating 2 Million Meals* to Feeding America® and helping connect employees and customers to other nonprofits.  

The holidays are a time of gratitude and giving, and this year T-Mobile is making sure its customers and employees have every opportunity to get in the spirit. This Giving Season, the Un-carrier is teaming up with <a href="https://www.feedingamerica.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Feeding America</a>, the largest nonprofit working with 200 food banks across the country and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs to end hunger in the United States. Due to the pandemic, unemployment and food insecurity soared, leading 53 million people to turn to food banks and community programs last year to help put food on the table at home. That’s why the company has announced it will be donating up to 2 million meals ($200,000 value) to Feeding America through the <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/offers/t-mobile-tuesdays" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">T-Mobile Tuesdays App</a> on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 29.

“Record inflation is causing demand to increase and remain high at food banks across the country,” says Lauren Biedron, vice president of Corporate Partnerships at Feeding America. “The Feeding America network is not immune to the impacts of inflation, with aspects of food bank operations including purchasing food, transporting donated food, energy for cold storage, and other costs including wages and even vehicle maintenance seeing increases. The latest Feeding America food bank pulse survey finds that 90% of all responding food banks reported seeing increased or steady demand for services amid record food price increases, with 60% being increased need. “Food donations are at an all-time low right now and historically dip after the holidays in January and February,” says Ryan Scott, chief development officer for <a href="http://www.foodlifeline.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Food Lifeline</a>, a nonprofit in Seattle and a member of the Feeding America network that works to serve the western Washington community and provides nutritious food to 1.37 million people. “We typically have four to five million pounds of food here in the warehouse at this time, but because of the pinch we only have about 1 million pounds. Letting people know they can donate 10 meals to Feeding America on behalf of T-Mobile with a simple tap on the app on Giving Tuesday is so important but introducing them to their local foodbanks so they know they can donate all year long is just as vital.”

T-Mobile has activated its emergency plan and is monitoring and preparing for Tropical Storm Nicole, which is gaining strength northwest of the Bahamas and is now located 205 miles east of Palm Beach, Florida. Nicole is predicted to make landfall on Florida’s Atlantic Coast between West Palm Beach and Vero Beach early Thursday morning and could become a hurricane. Strong winds, heavy rain and a storm surge causing coastal flooding are expected. Coastal flooding is also possible as far north as the Carolinas including Charleston and South Carolina, and Tybee Island, Georgia.  

Here's what we’re doing to be ready to respond and assist customers and communities: 

Network, Community Support and Stores

T-Mobile’s Network Emergency Management Team has extensively hardened our network in advance of the hurricane season and continues preparation to ensure resiliency of our service in areas anticipated to be affected by Nicole. The team has engineers, technicians and equipment — including generators, quick deploy satellites and temporary backhaul equipment such as microwave solutions — pre-staged in Tampa and Live Oak, Florida ready to roll and support customers, communities and officials. While our Community Support team is pre-staged in Miami and Live Oak with personnel and equipment to provide services such as Wi-Fi, charging devices, chargers and more. We’ll monitor and assess impact as the storm makes landfall and deploy relief efforts as needed. We are also assessing store locations in the projected path with some stores closing early this evening with delayed openings possible. As T-Mobile renews its commitment to hiring 10,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2023, one veteran employee shares a journey from hiding his PTSD to being encouraged to share his true story and supported with mental health resources to manage the challenges he faces.

When you thank Jamie Weare for his service you might notice he doesn’t say the words “Thank You.” Instead, he uses a universal language by signing the phrase with his hands. It’s a visceral response to your gratitude, even if, as Jamie admits, you’re most likely unaware of the specific sacrifices he’s made. 

“When I got into the civilian world, I felt people didn’t really grasp it at the time,” explains the T-Mobile interim coach at the Menaul Call Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. “They understood something happened and there’s a lot of ‘sorry for your loss’ and ‘thank you for your service,’ but to understand what that really means I think you have to have a loved one who served or have served yourself.”

What happened to Jamie after joining the Infantry in 2001 is not just a memory you neatly tuck away and move on from. It’s a part of who he is, and it’s also the part of him he suddenly felt he needed to hide when he began his journey back into civilian life. 

‘It’s become easier to talk about the accident,” says Jamie. “It’s the 20th anniversary this year. On March 29th 2002 I was involved in a training accident where a 120 mortar round misfired and basically exploded inside the tube. As a result of that accident three of my brothers in the vehicle with me that night never left Fort Irwin in Barstow, California.”

Jamie says he recuperated at the VA for almost 3 months, but emotionally he knew he also had to learn to cope. He remained in the army until 2004 partly because of opportunities he still wanted to accomplish and also because admittedly there was comfort in being surrounded with people who had similar experiences and understood his struggles. 

“Returning to civilian life was a challenge,” he says in reference to the mental health effects of his experience. “I had several jobs along the way and I felt like a lot of what came with me as a veteran is just swept under the rug and the only job that understood who I was and encouraged me to have an open dialogue about it and participate in different events to help others who have post-traumatic stress disorder was T-Mobile.”

When he applied for a job with T-Mobile after another telecommunication company he worked for closed its store during the pandemic, Jamie says he was unaware that the company was designated by Military Friendly® as a top Military Friendly Employer and Military Spouse Friendly employer, or that T-Mobile had made a <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/responsibility/community/military">commitment</a> to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2023 (the company is about 84% there!).  But, he says from the first day he stepped into his new role it was apparent what kind of support he was going to receive. The real kind.

“It’s not a publicity stunt,” he says with a smile when asked if he feels truly appreciated for his service at work. “T-Mobile doesn’t just say thank you, they honor you for the whole person you are. The skills I learned in the Army have made me flexible and translate well at work. T-Mobile has given me opportunities to use those skills in several different areas: I have been in closed loop, an interim associate trainer, and now an interim coach!”

Jamie says beyond being invited to NYC in 2021 to participate in the Veterans Day Parade and being connected with other veterans and supporters through T-Mobile’s more than 11,000 member strong Veterans & Allies Employee Resource Group, he also was able to take advantage of health benefits that catered towards goals of managing his PTSD. 

“T-Mobile has an amazing benefit that gives you 10 free counseling sessions to help you try different counselors to see what works for you,” says Jamie, “and that’s what I was able to do. My PTSD is so much more manageable now, even without the need for medication.”

Aware of the <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/community/mobile-mindfulness-the-future-of-mental-health">staggering statistic</a> regarding how many U.S. veterans continue to report having developed a mental health condition such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, the company has tailored elements of its wellbeing resource <a href="https://www.livemagenta.com/">LiveMagenta</a> for its veteran employees requiring support.

Jamie says he also has made use of the company’s childcare subsidy for his family and the tuition reimbursement program to attend The University of Arizona Global Campus to continue his higher education free of charge. He says when he first found a job opening at the T-Mobile call center, he had no idea about the company’s commitment to veterans and veteran family employment. But he says since the moment he applied for a position and reported his veteran status, he has seen for himself the investments being made to the military community. 

Jamie says he is proud that T-Mobile continues a presence at hundreds of job fairs and Veterans Affairs offices across the country and also partners with not-for- profit organizations such as <a href="https://www.hiringourheroes.org/">Hiring our Heroes</a>, <a href="https://fourblock.org/">FourBlock</a>, and <a href="https://www.warriors4wireless.org/">Warriors4Wireless</a> to help fund career readiness programs and community support initiatives.

He says he was excited to hear that the company also expanded its successful <a href="https://www.t-mobile.com/news/community/returnship-helps-veterans-reenter-workforce">TechX Returnship Program</a> to include veterans. TechX Returnship is a partnership with <a href="https://www.reachire.com/">reacHIRE</a> that helps facilitate paths to leadership roles for women—and now veterans— returning to the workforce in technology roles. The program provides opportunities to those with tech-centric resumes who’ve taken a long professional career break to care for family members, raise children, or to serve in the military.

“There are so many resources,” says Jamie. “I feel in my experiences there have been a lot of companies that don’t want to talk about the realities of serving and would rather hide behind the guise of ‘Thank you for your service.’ But T-Mobile really is there with impactful support for veterans.”

Jamie’s vulnerability about the challenges he’s faced is as disarming as his positivity. He’s the personification of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps. An indelible force of human spirit. And this year, Jamie received the company’s PEAK Achievement Award, the pinnacle of recognition at T-Mobile, which goes to the top 3% employees who are nominated by leadership and peers for being outstanding in job performance and company values. “Going to PEAK was an amazing experience,” says Jamie. “Just a week of love and celebration and meeting with senior leadership to hear directly from them how we’re making an impact on the business. Words can’t express my true feelings when I try to explain why I am so happy to be working for T-Mobile,” says Jamie. “It gave me back so many things I had lost.”
